Storage Cabinets - *ULTIMATE* Organization Hacks
If you've been following my adventures, you know my studio is my happy place – a cauldron of creativity, a portal to making magic. But let's be real, sometimes it’s more of a chaotic mess than anything else.
I knew I needed a serious storage intervention. So my latest DIY projects are two glorious raw plywood storage cabinets! These beauties aren't just practical, they're a testament to the power of taking control of your space, especially if your brain works a little differently (like mine!).
I built the first set of storage cabinets with drawers - which was QUITE the journey (drawers are not my strong suit). Watch the video if you want to learn how to make your own cabinets!
I built the second set of cabinets as a symmetrical compliment, and of course, I still needed way more space to store all the DIY chaos I live with. Watch the full video of building and organizing the cabinets:

Why Plywood?
Why raw plywood? Because it's a blank canvas! It's affordable, sturdy, and you can customize it to your heart's content. Plus, the raw look has a an industrial chic vibe that I love.
I also knew that cabinets would be the best route for storing my myriad of tools and hobby supplies because it would allow me to section like-items together. As a fellow creative spirit (and let’s be honest, a touch neurospicy), I know how easily a workspace can become overwhelming. When everything's scattered, it's hard to focus.
How to Organize
The best way to decrease organizational overwhelm is to start on a grand scale of zoning. In the video you may have seen how I have different areas for different tasks. I have a dedicated space for building, a space for painting, and hobbies.
Define Your Zones: Start by identifying your main activities. Are you a painter? A crafter? A tech wizard? Divide your space into zones for each activity. This creates a sense of order and helps your brain compartmentalize which products go where.
Visual Clarity is Key: Neurodivergent brains often thrive on visual cues. Clear containers, labeled bins, and open shelving are your best friends.
Vertical Storage: Don't let your walls go to waste! Pegboards, shelves, and hooks can maximize your vertical space and keep things off your work surface.
The Power of Labels: Label EVERYTHING. Even if you think you’ll remember what's in that box, label it. Future you will thank you! I used a label maker and made sure the labels were big and easy to read.
Neurodivergent Organization Hacks
Now, let's get into some specific tips for my fellow neurodivergent creators:
The "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" Problem: If you're like me, if you can't see it, you forget it exists. That's why those clear bins are so crucial! I also try to keep my most-used items within easy reach.
Hyper-focus and Distraction: When you're in the zone, it's easy to get sidetracked by clutter. Having a designated place for everything minimizes distractions and keeps you on track.
The "Just In Case" Dilemma: We all have those items we keep "just in case." But if you haven't used it in a year, it's probably time to let it go. Be ruthless! Decluttering is like casting a spell to banish chaos.
The "Done is Better Than Perfect" Mantra: Don't get hung up on making your storage perfect. Start with the basics and refine it as you go. Remember, progress over perfection!
My Personal System
Make sure that when you are choosing a process for yourself that is works for your brain specifically! Try to choose a system that works with you; not against you!
Personally, Vanessa and I realized that my tools and supplies could be used for multiple types of projects, so instead of zoning by hobby function, we zoned by original tool function.
Here’s my list of drawers and cabinets:
Cabinet 1:
Hand tools
Chain and Wire
Leather and Rope
Sandpaper
Glue
Tape
Scissors and Blades
Plastic Wrap and Bags
Command Strips and Tiles
Gloves
Cricut Supplies
Dremmel
Staplers
Furniture Flip
Stained Glass Cubby
Cabinet 2
Cleaning supplies
sponges
paper towel
liquid cleaners
Decor Storage
I even built in a pull out trash compartment! It’s super convenient and keeps the studio free from an eye-sore. I cut out a hole in the cabinet top and voila! We have an easy-access garbage.
