How to Set Up Your Dream Office Space

It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, my creative studio was nothing but land and big ideas. Slowly, I transformed it into a space filled with color, storage solutions galore, a cozy lounge for brainstorming (or just naps), and now—finally—it’s time to focus on the heart of it all: the office.

This isn’t just any office. It’s the hub of my creative business, and it needs to be functional, inspiring, and, most importantly, BIG. I’m talking about the biggest desk I’ve ever built. And because I’m leveling up, it also needs to accommodate another person (hi, Vanessa!).

Creating your dream office space is about more than just choosing a desk and a chair—it’s about crafting an environment that fuels productivity, sparks creativity, and reflects your personal style. Whether you’re working from home, setting up a creative studio, or revamping an existing workspace, the right design choices can transform any office into an inspiring hub for success.

From functional office layouts to stylish decor, this guide will walk you through the essential elements to consider when setting up your dream office. Plus, I’ll share my favorite must-have office items that you can shop directly from my curated storefront!

Office Layout Inspiration

Before diving into furniture and decor, take the time to map out your ideal office layout. A well-designed space should promote efficiency while catering to your work habits.

Key Office Layout Tips:

  • Position your desk strategically. Avoid placing your desk with your back to the door. If you’re a headphones person (like me), not being able to see who’s walking in can make you feel like you’re about to be ambushed—no thanks!

  • Test your layout before committing. Trust me, nothing is worse than spending hours setting up only to realize it’s not working. Arrange temporary setups to see what feels best before making permanent decisions.

  • Utilize vertical space. Wall-mounted shelves, pegboards, and floating desks help maximize storage and keep essentials within reach without cluttering your workspace.

My Office Layout

I wanted a desk layout that functioned with the space and incorporated my knee wall, so I needed a custom design. I enlisted the help of my friend, Marie, who is a 3D design wizard. She conjured multiple desk layout for me until I landed on the perfect one. We went for a “G-shape” which fit in the space perfectly and allowed ample room for both Vanessa and I to work.

Desk & Storage Solutions

Your desk is the heart of your office, so make it work for you! Whether you prefer a spacious work surface, a standing desk, or a custom-built DIY masterpiece, investing in a high-quality desk is key.

Desk Must-Haves:

  • A spacious work surface. If you need ample room for creative projects or dual monitors, opt for a large desk or build a custom one (like I did—spoiler: it was a wild ride!).

  • Storage solutions that fit your needs. Drawer organizers, filing cabinets, and shelving units keep your workspace clutter-free while looking chic.

  • A stylish and functional chair. You’ll be spending hours in this seat, so make sure it’s comfortable and ergonomic. Your back will thank you!

My Custom Desk Set Up

I opted for a beautiful live-edge maple desk top that I got for a great price form a local miller in my home town. The wood is beautiful, well-priced, AND I got to help out a small business in the process. It was a win-win DIY decision. Although starting with live-edge maple meant a little more work to plane them down into desk-tops, the end result was so worth it! I finished the maple wood with a Rubio Monocoat Wood oil, and voila! We had a huge-G shaped desk built for two! For some extra storage, I purchased Alex units from Ikea and inserted them underneath the desk at the back of the knee wall. Now we have plenty of storage for all of our office needs.

Office Hacks: Comfort and Efficiency

A well-organized desk enhances focus and workflow. Here are a few essential accessories that will level up your workspace:

  • Monitor stands to improve posture and reduce neck strain.

  • Cable organizers to eliminate unsightly wires and maintain a clutter-free space.

  • Headphone stands for a designated spot to keep headphones within reach (because if you’re like me, they’re basically a third limb!).

  • Visual planners to track tasks and deadlines with a sleek, stylish touch.

My Office Hacks: DIY Buys and Builds

Can I really call myself a true DIYer if I don’t at least try to recreate some trendy office must-haves? To keep our budget in check (and because I love a good project), I took matters into my own hands and DIY’d some essential office goodies!

First up—Vanessa’s monitor stand!

I whipped up a simple yet stylish laptop riser using scrap wood. I made sure to measure the perfect ergonomic height and took some inspo from the popular Amazon versions. I’m all about a good, simple, and functional DIY!

Next on the list - headphone stands!

Because in our neuro-spicy office, anything that helps with comfort, focus, and staying on task is a must. I decided to challenge myself and built them out of leftover maple from our desks, pairing them with sleek brass rods for a touch of fancy.

Of course, I couldn’t forget some custom floating shelves above my desk. I crafted them from scrap wood and made sure they were perfectly level (thanks, laser level!).

To tie everything together, I painted all these DIYs in a bold, happy yellow for a playful pop of color.

And finally, the pièce de résistance: a giant custom calendar! Using my Cricut, I printed out a sleek design and adhered it to a custom-cut acrylic plate, which I installed on my knee wall. Since Vanessa and I are both very visual thinkers (shocking, I know!), we needed something big and in-our-faces to keep track of our work plans.

Add Personality with Decor, Lighting, and Accessories

Your office should be a reflection of YOU! Infuse personality into your workspace with decor that inspires creativity and keeps you motivated.

Office Decor Ideas:

Wallpaper or accent walls to add a bold, stylish touch. I personally love a funky, abstract design! The wallpaper I used is from Livette’s Wallpaper

Framed artwork & inspirational quotes for a motivational boost (because sometimes, we all need that extra push!).

Ambient lights can double as statement pieces. I call this light my Wonder Woman Light - as she’s holding the lasso of truth! Super simple DIY light that brings me so much joy to the space. Check out these products to recreate this light.

Ergonomic accessories like wrist rests, desk pads, and a good mouse and keyboard set up!

ADHD friendly time management tools and figet toys like digital planners and our favourite 3-D printed dragon toys to keep on our desks.

The finished space! Both functional and creative <3
