This bedroom reveals simple tips to creating a cozy eclectic space in your home.
It's no secret that I love a harmonious eclectic design style. There is something so inviting about the warmth of a dark color on a wall, balanced with creamy neutrals that feel like a warm glass of milk on a late night. If my own bedroom wasn't a testament to this feeling, then this beautiful bedroom full of lived-in vintage charm should bare no exception. With a harmonious design, filled with sweet vintage surprises and modern decor, this room is the definition of what it takes to create an inviting, cozy eclectic space in your home.
Situated in a beautiful lakeside home in Eastern Ontario, this guest bedroom caters it's beautiful timeless design style to those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
WALL COLOR
In any space, the wall color you choose can say everything about the language you want a room to speak. Of course this is just my opinion but I'm pretty sure this room is speaking in a soft British accent saying something along the lines of: "Good Day To You! Grab a book, a cozy blanket, some comfy attire, and please do relax."
Using dark colors as your base doesn't mean a space will feel like a dungeon. Paired with soft neutral accessories, this room invites you in with warmth. The dark green sets the tone and creates a unifying factor allowing the eclectic pieces to tell a story. I'm a bit bias to the dark green, but something about this color makes me feel a little closer to nature - Don't you think?

DIY DOOR HEADBOARD
Oh, how I love this DIY.
This is the second time this charming little DIY project has helped transform a room in a big way. I simply love the conversation it creates, taking a conventional item and using it in such an unconventional way. With it's vintage charm and rustic look, it became the anchor piece in this bedroom set up, helping to set the tone for the rest of the decor elements styled within.
Even better, this DIY is so simple.
Step 1: Take any door (preferably a framed or paneled door), sand away any pre-existing paint or top coat.
Step 2: Remove hardware.
Step 3: Using Chalk (or similar matte type paint such as mineral paint), dry brush the paint over the entire door. Let Dry. Apply more paint if needed. Use a 220 grit sandpaper to lightly scuff up a few areas to help give it an aged look.
Step 4: Purchase a 1x3 piece of lumber, cut to length of door, and paint in same style. Once dry, attach to top of door frame using screws.
Step 5: Reattach any hardware you want showing. Use industrial strength glue to attach door knob back on. No, the door handle can't be used - it's officially decorative.
Step 6: Hang door above bed using french cleats or by screwing directly into the wall.
* Add hooks or L brackets on each side to add extra function, style or lighting!
HELLO ECLECTIC COZY, I LOVE YOU.
When it comes to creating the perfect eclectic + cozy room, I've learned it really comes down to creating a sense of "organic" balance within all the mismatched stylistic elements. Yes, following basic design rules of three, each corner of this room was decorated using a mix of natural earthy treasures, modern + vintage trinkets and sweet little DIY surprises. Every element has a way of telling it's own story. Although very personal, it carries a hint of whimsy. The perfect intimate recipe to any space, in my opinion of course.
If there is anything I've learned about creating a feeling of "eclectic cozy", it's TEXTURE, TEXTURE, TEXTURE...but not too much texture - it's all about balance people. In this space you'll find a mix of soft florals, white lace, embroidered patterns and quilted comforts that are repeated in several places to create a sense of unity.
On the bed, the combination of natural colored classic + vintage fabric types create the perfect "lived-in" mood. Starting with a creamy butter yellow quilt with matching pillow cases, it's perfectly layered with a mix-match of pillows including an aged quilted floral pattern, a beige + black damask inspired pattern and a gold lettered pillow top as it's cherry.
Second to that, a cozy sherpa blanket is casually draped over the bed, a place ready to be cuddled into.
FINDING BALANCE + UNITY IN THE DIFFERENT
Along the top shelf of the DIY headboard, a gallery of mixed-sized paintings are displayed. Although each piece reveals a different art style and frame type (keeping to the eclectic vibe), they somehow provide a sense of unity and balance with one another. Each piece telling their own personal story, while also telling one larger story in the over all space.
A perfect combination of classic meets vintage. I also love this way of styling because it's easy to change up the artwork whenever you want, as you don't need to commit to holes in your walls!
Although some will say different wood types can be a faux pas, in an eclectic room, I say it's welcomed! Keeping scale and symmetry in check, these two diverse dressers found harmony in their similar styled lines.
I love how each dresser has a way of coordinating its own story and color palette.
NEGATIVE SPACE IS NOT A NEGATIVE
When you first step into the room, you're immediately taken back by the general warmth you feel, even though you're standing in a rather large, open spaced room. It really goes to show you that less... is some cases, really is more.
When it comes to eclectic decorating, you have to be careful... There can be a fine line between having fun with a mismatch of items, to suddenly feeling like your living in a real-life rendition of a Jackson Pollock. AHHHH! Again, it comes down to balance. Don't be afraid to welcome the negative space.
It was important to have a focal point, which for this space was the headboard and gallery wall above it. Beyond that, the space needed a place of rest for the eyes. Keeping the walls empty helped tone down the design and harmonize all the playful texture seen throughout.
